It not that far away from the sea if you take into account that Breydon water was a very much larger expanse of water. Indeed Beccles further along the Waveny valley was a viable port. From the waters edge you can see how the river has silted and reeded up to along the tree line at the bottom of the slopes that over look the river. Could be another explanation that doesn't fit in with modern logic.

Any idea as to why its called Herringfleet? I mean its miles from the sea.
